Independent Grind Is Paying Off for Dakotah Faye

Dakotah Faye has been putting in work—and the independent hip-hop artist is building the kind of momentum that’s getting harder to overlook.
Born Dakotah Poitra and based in Minot, North Dakota, Faye has spent years developing his music, performing across the country and building an audience without waiting for a major-label machine to do the work for him.
His journey dates back to 2008, but recent years have brought some of his biggest milestones yet.
Years of Independent Work
Dakotah Faye’s story isn’t an overnight-success story.
According to his official biography, he began making music in 2008 and has continued building his catalog while developing an independent career centered around recording, touring and connecting directly with listeners.
That consistency has produced a sizable catalog across streaming platforms, including multiple projects and singles. Fans can also find his music, merchandise and latest updates through his official website.
In 2025, Faye says his music surpassed one million career streams, while his live schedule took him through more than 40 shows across 11 states.
That kind of movement matters for an independent artist. Streaming numbers tell part of the story, but repeatedly getting in front of audiences in different markets is another piece of building something that can last.

Faye’s independent run has also put him alongside some recognizable names in hip-hop.
His résumé includes opening or performing alongside artists such as Tech N9ne, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony and Warren G, while his collaborations have connected him with artists including Rittz and Sean Anonymous.
Those opportunities have allowed Faye to build outside his home market while continuing to represent North Dakota—an area that doesn’t always receive much attention in national hip-hop conversations.
Dakotah Faye Builds Beyond Social Media
Social media can make almost anybody look busy.
What caught our attention with Dakotah Faye is that his movement doesn’t stop there.
His career has received coverage from regional publications, including the Minot Daily News, which profiled his journey from recording music in a closet to performing on larger stages. He’s also continued releasing new music in 2026, keeping his catalog moving alongside his live performances.
That combination—music, shows, audience engagement and consistent output—is what gives an independent artist something tangible to build on.
Putting North Dakota Hip-Hop on the Map

North Dakota isn’t typically one of the first places mentioned when conversations turn to hip-hop.
Faye has embraced that rather than running from it.
Building from Minot gives his story a different angle from artists coming through traditional industry centers such as Atlanta, Los Angeles or New York. His path has depended heavily on creating opportunities, traveling and developing an audience market by market.
And after more than a decade of work, that grind appears to be producing results.
