Too $hort Says He’s Not Slowing Down at 60, Drops New Album Produced by Lil Jon
Hip-hop legend Too $hort is proving that age isn’t slowing him down. At 60 years old, the Oakland rap pioneer has released his 23rd studio album, Sir Too $hort Vol. 2: Drink & Smoke, a project produced entirely by longtime collaborator Lil Jon.
The release comes more than two decades after one of his biggest hits, “Blow the Whistle,” showing that Too $hort continues to evolve while staying true to the sound that made him one of hip-hop’s most respected veterans.
In recent interviews, Too $hort explained that he has no plans to retire from music. He believes hip-hop should embrace artists with longevity in the same way other genres celebrate veteran performers. He also pointed to fellow artists like E-40, Snoop Dogg, and Fat Joe as examples of rappers continuing to perform and release music later in their careers.
The album also carries personal meaning, featuring production from DJ Young Slade, the late son of Lil Jon. Too $hort said being able to work on the project helped honor Young Slade’s legacy while creating something special alongside Lil Jon.
As hip-hop continues to mature, Too $hort’s latest release is another reminder that longevity and experience still have a place in the culture.
