John Legend Pharrell fans have something new to look forward to as the two music heavyweights team up for Muse, a new album arriving October 23, 2026.
The R&B singer announced Muse, a new 16-track album produced entirely by Pharrell Williams. The project arrives through Republic Records.
The collaboration marks the first full project Legend and Pharrell have created together despite knowing each other for more than two decades.
John Legend and Pharrell Try Something New
Fans know John Legend for piano-driven ballads, but John Legend and Pharrell wanted Muse to sound different.
Legend said he wanted to move outside the formula that has defined some of his biggest records. The new album combines elements of gospel, classic soul, doo-wop, Afrobeat and hip-hop.
Pharrell envisioned a cinematic sound inspired partly by artists such as Nina Simone, Nat King Cole and Marvin Gaye.
Legend described the creative direction as having a “Black James Bond aesthetic.”
The Album Started After a Clipse Collaboration
The idea for Muse grew after Legend appeared on Clipse’s comeback album Let God Sort ‘Em Out.
Legend contributed vocals to “The Birds Don’t Sing,” which Pharrell produced. Legend’s performance inspired Pharrell to explore what they could create together on a complete project.
The two eventually began recording in Paris in January 2025. They worked from Pharrell’s studio inside Louis Vuitton headquarters, where Pharrell serves as men’s creative director.
‘Muse’ Features Pharrell and Clipse
Pharrell doesn’t stay behind the boards for the entire album.
He appears as a featured artist on six of its 16 songs, including the title track, “Her,” “Get Back” and “Fireflies.”
Clipse also appears on the track “Bodies on the Floor.”
Legend has released “Daylight” alongside the album announcement. He previewed the song during CBS’s America’s Tailgate special before its official release.
John Legend Wants to Shake Up His Formula
More than two decades into his recording career, Legend isn’t interested in simply repeating what has already worked.
He said artists can reach a point where they rely on their established hits instead of creating something new. With Muse, he wanted to challenge himself and make music that felt fresh.
That makes the Pharrell collaboration especially interesting. Both artists have established sounds, but Muse gives them an opportunity to combine those styles across R&B, soul and hip-hop.
Muse arrives October 23, 2026.
